How to Recognize and Avoid Online Scams
Online scams often use urgency, fear, or an appealing offer to get someone to share information or send money. A pause gives you time to check the request independently.
Warning signs to watch for
- A message pressures you to act immediately or threatens account closure, arrest, or a lost benefit.
- A caller, text, or email asks for a password, PIN, one-time code, or remote access to your device.
- A link leads to a sign-in page whose address does not match the organization’s official website.
- Someone asks you to move money to a “safe” account, pay with gift cards, or keep a transaction secret.
- An unexpected invoice, delivery notice, job offer, or prize asks for payment or personal information.
Safer steps before you respond
- Do not click a link or use a phone number included in an unexpected message.
- Contact the organization using a trusted website, statement, or card you already have.
- Never share passwords, PINs, or verification codes. A legitimate support representative should not ask you to disclose them.
- If you already shared information or sent money, contact your bank promptly through a trusted channel and explain what happened.
- Save relevant messages and transaction details in case they are needed for a report.
