P2P Payment Safety: Before You Send Money
Person-to-person payment services can make it easy to send money, but a fast transfer may be difficult to reverse. Treat each payment like handing over cash and verify the details before confirming it.
Check before confirming
- Confirm the recipient using a trusted method, especially when paying a new contact.
- Review the recipient name, handle, phone number, and amount on the final confirmation screen.
- Be cautious of urgent requests, unexpected “refund” instructions, and offers that require you to send money first.
- Use payment services only with people you know when required by the service’s terms.
Understand the service terms
Availability, eligibility, transfer timing, fees, and dispute rights vary by provider. Read the terms and understand whether a payment is protected before sending it. Do not assume that money held in a payment app has the same protections as a bank deposit.
If a payment looks wrong
Contact the payment provider or financial institution promptly through an official channel. Save the transaction details and related messages. If someone contacted you unexpectedly, do not use their link or phone number to seek help.
