SECURITY GUIDE
Cybersecurity Threats and Safer Online Banking
Cyber risks change over time, but many attacks still rely on the same tactics: tricking someone into revealing access details, installing harmful software, or approving an unexpected payment.
Common risks
- Phishing and impersonation: Fraudulent messages or calls imitate a bank, business, or government agency to collect information or prompt a payment.
- Password reuse: A password exposed through another service may be tried against other accounts.
- Unsafe device access: Out-of-date software, untrusted downloads, or shared devices can expose saved information.
- Unexpected verification prompts: A request to approve a sign-in or share a one-time code may be part of an attempt to access an account.
Build safer habits
- Use a unique, hard-to-guess password for online banking and protect it with a password manager if you use one.
- Keep your operating system, browser, and security software up to date.
- Open the bank’s official website directly instead of following sign-in links in unexpected messages.
- Keep passwords, PINs, and verification codes private. Do not approve an access prompt you did not initiate.
- Review account activity through trusted channels and report unfamiliar transactions to your bank promptly.
For business teams
Use separate logins where available, limit access to people who need it, and verify changes to payment instructions with a known contact using a second trusted channel.
